What Are You Creating with Your Communication?
There’s More to Communication
Not too long ago, I spoke to a group of real estate agents at a Houston-area brokerage office about social media use in their business. The intent of my talk was to help them understand that there’s more to social media than posting homes for sale, open house details, or anything that is just about the selling or buying of homes. It requires being social.
Trouble comes when a professional thinks, “I must post on social media to get business.” What they don’t know is that what they post can make, or break, their success. If they post only business content and expect business from it, well, they likely won’t get any business.
So how does this presentation I gave apply to the second Powerful People Practice™ featured in this article? (To catch you up, each month this year in I’m writing about the 11 different Powerful People Practices™ I’ve identified in my work as an accredited and certified coach. I’m sharing a different Powerful People Practice™ each month. If you missed the last two, make sure to start here..)
It applies because social in general is just that, social. Google the world social, and you will see that it means “needing companionship.” It requires more than one person, a companion. It requires thinking about more than just yourself and your business. It requires thinking about others, what they want, and how you can help them get it. This same thinking applies to social media as well. Yet many postings are often about one person – the one posting – you. And that’s not social.
Powerful People Practices™
The second Powerful People Practices™ is this:
We work together to create positive and long-lasting prosperity.
What’s the keyword in this sentence? TOGETHER! Together = Social. You + Me = Social. More than just the one person = companionship.
The other keyword is positive. Back to the agents, I spoke to. When I asked them, “What makes communication good or bad?” Their answers confirmed my suspicion about communication. It’s the positive in any communication that’s good. And it’s the negative content that’s not good.
Then when asked, “What makes social media good or bad?” They gave the same answer. It’s the positive in any social media that’s good. And it’s the negative content that’s not good.
That sounds pretty simple, right? Maybe, until you think about the answers to these questions: What sort of communication do you receive? Good or bad? How often do you see others on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, email, or other platforms to talk about themselves, and worse, spew anger, hate, judgment, self-promotion, selling, “dirty laundry,” and more?
Positivity creates positivity. And added to the equation above creates prosperity for all. We work TOGETHER to create positive and long-lasting prosperity. And now, another question, and the most important of all: What are you creating with your communication?
